Forgiveness Series #3 – Overcoming Relationship Struggles

By Keith Cook

There are countless people who suffer from low self esteem and feelings of unworthiness. These emotions can be the result of abuse, bullying,or neglect.

Due to the sexual abuse I experienced as a child, I developed low self esteem and feelings of unworthiness. As I got older, I found myself running from female to female in search of love through sex. I was attracting a lot of other females who were in search of the same thing, love through sex. A classic case of the blind leading the blind.

I wanted the other person to fill my empty space and the other person wanted me to fill their empty space. It was easier to find a sexual partner for the night rather than commit to a relationship.

I was hurting, lonely, afraid, and vulnerable. I struggled with low self esteem and isolated myself from friends and events because I was unhappy. Because I’d experienced so many confusing and failed relationships, I felt that I didn’t deserve to be happy. It just wasn’t in the cards for me.

When I found a woman I admired and attracted into my life, I was happy (for a while). I let down my guard and allowed the romantic fulfillment to write my story. My heart surrendered to the joy of the moment, but soon felt a familiar tug. This joyous moment would soon create an uneasiness that began to grow. And the only possible way for me to return to my comfortable, vulnerable, lonely, afraid, hurt state was to sabotage the relationship.

I had a very unhealthy, deep rooted belief toward myself. So, I had to reach out for help. I just didn’t know how to go at it alone. I sought out the assistance of a life coach. One of the first topics shared with me in respect to personal healing was forgiving myself.

Now, I hope my experience will inspire others to move forward, reach out for help, and finally heal.

“Forgiveness is for you – not the other person. If you hold onto all the pain & you never forgive, then the other person’s still controlling you. Let go. Release the past and embrace forgiveness.”

For those of you who are really ready to move forward in your life, finally take back control, and get past your struggles, I am always available to talk with you one-on-one.
