“Hey Rocky, Watch Me Pull A Rabbit Out Of This Hat!”

I watched with great delight as Rita performed a minor miracle for the customer, who by anyone’s account, was having a really tough day!
But then something awful happened. My heart sank as I watched Rita destroy everything she had worked for by making sure the lady understood (in great detail) everything she had to “go through” to achieve what she viewed as “an amazing act of kindness”.
The need for appreciation and recognition runs deep in our DNA. What Rita did was understandable, but terribly counterproductive.
In customer service you really only have two jobs:
1) Show the customer that you truly (and deeply) care about THEM! Which, of course, requires that you do indeed care about them!
2) Demonstrate through your actions that you can actually CREATE SOLUTIONS out of thin air!
You don’t need to TELL your customers anything. You need to SHOW your customers that they can trust and believe that you are the answer to their problems and that for all intensive purposes you are their own personal “magician”.
This is in fact what they will pay you for. They are not interested in becoming your support system. They will however gladly become your audience once you truly establish your dedication to becoming THEIR advocate.
You see, my number one success secret is to follow my dad’s advice: ”It really doesn’t matter how many OTHER people think you are great. It really only matters if the person in the mirror thinks you are great! That person won’t be convinced of anything by listening to you talk a good game. That person is only impressed when you are so busy being great that you DON’T HAVE TIME TO TALK ABOUT HOW GREAT YOU ARE!”
In other words, if you “assume the position” of greatness (and give your ego indisputable evidence that you are indeed what you want others to think you are) your own subconscious mind will begin to believe in you on a cellular level.
Once that happens, you have effectively removed the lid on what’s possible for you!!
