How can you harness chronic worry & make it work for you?
By Guest Blogger, Dina Marais
Chronic worry can make you feel older than you are – how can you harness this worry and make it work for you and by doing so, feeling younger?
On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 means you are dead and 10 means you are unstoppable, how do you feel most of the time? When you worry, you are thinking about worst scenarios of things still to happen and that puts you in a mind-state of fear. Fear stands for False Evidence Appearing Real.
Your mind does not know the difference between an imagined or real experience. So when you worry and experience fear, your body follows suit. Your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises, adrenaline is released and your body is ready for fight or flight. As an after-effect your energy diminishes dramatically and leaves you feeling depressed, because nothing has changed.
It has been proven that negative mind-states contribute to the development of osteoporosis, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, causing you to not to only feel older, but to age faster. By making this a habit where you constantly feel as if you are carrying the world on your shoulders, your posture slumps forward, you frown constantly and rarely smiles.
Worry, fear, the past and the future only exist in your mind. The only moment that is real is NOW, the present. And in this present moment everything is fine. In every present moment everything is perfect.
When you worry your thoughts focus on the negative, on what you dread to happen. Since that is imagined, ask yourself what you want to happen and imagine and focus on that! As you are doing that, feel how your mind-state immediately turns positive, how you feel lighter, how your energy increases and your posture straightens. In fact, just by straightening your posture, putting a smile on your face and walking purposefully will stimulate positive thoughts also. Positive mind-states causes the brain to release Noradrenalin, Dopamine and Serotonin that depresses stress and makes you feel good!
Every time you catch yourself worrying and experience negative mind-state:
• Acknowledge the feeling, accept it and let it go
• Ask “What am I thinking about”
• Then ask, “What do I want to happen?”
• Imagine that scenario and make the movie bright and colourful
• Do this over and over again until you experience positive feelings
• Breathe it in, filling your body while holding the positive scenario in your mind
• Focus on what you can do to fulfill the scenario you want and take action
• Practice to stay in the present moment
