Change The State You Are In!

By Guest Blogger, Corey Jahnke

I was in a mood one day because I was telling myself a bad story about how I had more things to do than I had time to do them in.

As I lumbered down the stairs mumbling something crabby sounding, I heard a song that went like this: “Rubber Ducky you’re the one. YOU Make bath time lots of fun. Rubber ducky I’m awfully fond of you!” . My son was watching video tapes of Sesame Street and I became 5 years old in the blink of an eye!” I loved being 5 years old!

Those 3 sentences changed my life because as soon as I heard them (It had been 35 or 40 years); I recognized them instantly and I couldn’t help but smile, find the spring in my step, and approach the world with an entirely new disposition.

Then it occurred to me that our mood is entirely subjective to our perception of the moment. If you stay in bad spirits it’s because you want to. No more. No less.

Why? I remember motivation icon Anthony Robbins discussing negation dispositions. He said this: “If you don’t like the state you are in, change your state! Get up, dance around, and ask yourself: ‘What could I get excited about?’. Your mood is up to you. Successful people master the challenge of altering their course if the course they are on isn’t working!”.

For me it has become a battle I am determined to win!! Whenever I dislike the man in the mirror I sing out loud the words to Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” and that get’s me going in a positive direction! Whenever I feel overwhelmed with work, I shout: “DA, DA, DA, DA, DA, DA, CHARGE!!” and I am instantly up to the challenge!!

What could you do to turn yourself around when you are stuck in pessimist or whiner mode? What suggestions do you have for me to make sure I keep positive and grow myself and my circle of influence?

I have a ton of things to get done and Gloomy Gus is not a very hard worker!! I am determined to send him packing! What moods or personalities do you wish to shed?

    Hi Corey,

This is so true we all have the ability to change our states. What came first the negative mood or the negative thoughts? A negative mood can be from a reaction from an unpleasant event or something that triggered a negative memory. This trigger is done unconsciously so most of us aren’t aware of it. All we know is that we’re experiencing a feeling of sadness or anger. We can start thinking about pleasant thoughts; things that make us feel happy. When this is done the negative mood is replaced by happy mood. The good news is that we can’t feel negative and happy mood simultaneously, our attention can only focus on one mood at one time. So we can chose to think about painless thoughts.

    Nice Post!
    Eugene
