How to Create Optimum Balance between your Personal & Professional Life

By Joy Bing Fleming, MBA

Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Les Hewitt have a best-selling book entitled The Power of Focus, and they have a section about creating an optimum balance between your personal and professional life. They tell the story of 2 couples that are around the same age, and they both have children. The 1st couple rarely sees each other. The husband leaves for work early in the morning before the kids get up, and he gets home at night after the kids go to bed. So, he never sees his children. He also works on the weekends, and there never seems to be enough time in the day for him to get everything accomplished.

The 2nd couple spends a lot of time together. The husband is always home everynight for dinner. He rarely works on weekends, and the couple takes a lot of vacations during the year. I bet there’s a lot of people that can relate to that 1st couple. You feel like there’s just not enough hours in the day. So, how do you create a balance between your personal and professional life?

Well, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Les Hewitt created a system called: B-ALERT. So, what is this
B-ALERT system all about?

B – BLUEPRINT

“Every well-built house started with a definite plan in the form of blueprints.” Napoleon Hill

You need a set of blueprints for your life. Make sure that your blueprint includes specific, well planned out actions for your day. There are 2 options for preparing your daily blueprint. Either do it the night before or early in the morning before your day has started. However, research shows that if you create your blueprint the night before, your subconscious mind will actually work during the night figuring out how to fulfill your next day’s plan.

A – ACTION

“The one thing that separates winners from losers is, winners take action.” Anthony Robbins

Action is an extremely important element of this system. Please note that there’s a difference between being busy all day and taking well thought out actions. Many people are busy all day, but at the end of the day, they have nothing to show for it. Make sure your actions are specific ones that are always bringing you closer to accomplishing your goals.

Focus on those things that you love to do and those things that you do well. Delegate other routine tasks. By delegating unwanted projects and other tasks, that will free up your time.

L – LEARNING

“There are essentially two things that will make you wiser – the books you read and the people you meet.” Charles “Tremendous” Jones

Reading expands your knowledge, builds self-confidence, helps you overcome fears, creates awareness, and helps you to become an even better person. So, what should you read? Anything that is stimulating to you and anything that gives you an edge in your business.

Today, you can get most books on CD, so when you’re driving to work in the morning, just put in one of those CD’s. That’s an easy way to incorporate books into your life.

You can also learn from yourself and others. Think about how you overcame your last challenge. Observe other people. How do wealthy people talk? How do wealthy people live? Why do some people struggle while others succeed? Using other people’s experiences as a guide for learning will greatly help you.

E – EXERCISE

“Having all the money in the world isn’t much good if you can hardly get out of bed in the morning to enjoy it.” Author Unknown

Exercising increases your energy levels, relieves stress and anxiety, and promotes good health. Exercising doesn’t have to be boring. There are many ways to make it fun. Get a dance aerobics tape. Listen to your favorite songs while you exercise. Join a fitness club. Workout with friends. Be creative.

R – RELAXING

“Oh, to be free from the stifling pressures of life – to rest, a peaceful slumber that will rejuvenate my soul.” Les Hewitt

Everyone needs time to relax and re-charge your batteries during the day. You can use this time to meditate and visualize what you want in your life.

T – THINKING

“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.” Peace Pilgrim

Finally, at the end of the day you need time to reflect. Take a few minutes to take a mental snapshot of your day (like it’s a mini-movie with you as the star). How did you do? What did you do well? Are there any adjustments you could’ve made to create a better result?

That’s the B-ALERT system. Here’s an easy way for someone to incorporate it into their life. Your blueprint is your daily to do list. Simply create that the night before and make sure it includes well thought out action plans. Then, everyday, include an “hour of power” which is 20 minutes of learning/reading, 20 minutes of exercising, and 20 minutes of relaxing. Finally, at the end of the day, reflect on the events that happened that day.

Great post with very useful information. The blueprint is where it all starts and is the foundation of .. well.. anything and everything you endeavor, because without a blueprint (goals, objectives, vision) you find that you work really hard at going in circles.

Like the post. I read Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography over a year ago and man what a Great book to read. He was a guy that simply did not waste a single moment of time and lived his life according to his virtues. His model of living really inspired me to the point where I started living my life according to my top 5 values (Spirituality, Family and Friends, Physical Health, Career Growth and Development, and Personal Hobbies). It has been an amazing year living under this model and look forward to the next 60-70 to go! Living under this model even helps with my decision making in life in creating a balance. I remember turning down a job that was going to pay me more than three times what I was currently making because family and friends is ranked higher than career growth and development for me. The commute to this job would take me at least three hours of my day in traffic which would mean less time spiritually, less time with family and friends and less time spent working out.

I even started blogging and created a blog that people enjoy reading (http://EricKochLiving.blogspot.com). The blog was more of a self help tool for me, which it still is. I never really intended on it to be a positive force in other peoples lives as well. I feel good that others are finding it useful.

Being married to my wife is awesome as well! Before we got married over eight years ago, we discussed several things including travel, being supportive of each others dreams no matter what they were, and not to lose out on hanging out with family and friends. We have three boys and stay busy, but do an excellent job at being supportive in these areas and traveling. I won’t lie, we did have our ups and downs physically and financially over the years, like any relationship, but we continue to be best of friends and are great at being supportive to one another in becoming the people we ultimately want to be and achieve in life. I recommend people going over these things before getting married like what we did to determine if this will be the right fit on being married to your life partner or not.

I also highly recommend reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin for a great read to learn more about what he did in his 80+ years of living, but to also find a model of someone who lived life the fullest!

Joy finding balance is what life is all about in my opinion…I find it’s so easy to swing on one side of personal or business and make it a daily routine to focus on making sure I do find that natural balance.

In fact that’s what my blog is dedicated to…helping find natural balance, awakening to living more consciously so we don’t find ourselves trapped in one area of our life.

Thanks for your post, great quotes too by the way!!!

Have you seen me swinging from silk yet?
