How to Figure Out What You’re Passionate About and Clarify Your Purpose

By Joy Bing Fleming, MBA

What is your life purpose? What are you passionate about? What’s your vision for the future? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you’re not alone.

Like many of us, we’ve lost site of what our true purpose is. Without a purpose, it’s easy to get side tracked and not really accomplish anything. It’s easy to stay at a j.o.b. (just over broke) that we really don’t like because we’re not focused on our true purpose. So, how do you find your life purpose?

There are several ways. One way is to write down the times that you have felt the most excited, enthusiastic, happy, joyful, and alive. In Jack Canfield’s best selling book, The Success Principles, he talks about creating an “I Want” list. He said, “One of the easiest ways to begin clarifying what you truly want is to make a list of 30 things you want to do, 30 things you want to have, and 30 things you want to be before you die.”

Everyone has an inner guidance system that tells us if we’re “on purpose”. When we fill the most joy and happiness, we know we’re on the right track. Follow your instincts, and always follow your heart.

Set aside some quiet time and ask yourself:

  • If I absolutely knew that I would not fail, what would I really like to do?
  • If money was not an issue at all, what would I like to achieve?
  • What’s really important to me?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What do I like to read and talk about?
  • What do I desire most?
  • What really makes me happy?
  • What activities and hobbies really excite me?
  • What does success mean to me?
  • As a child, what did I love to do?

Once you know what your purpose is, organize your life around it. Stay focused, and don’t let anything stop you. Read your purpose everyday. Figure out how you can incorporate your passion/purpose into your daily life. Ask someone that has already accomplished what you want to do (find a mentor). Ask them out to lunch, or ask if you can shadow them for a day. Ask them to share their success stories with you. Most people love to talk about themselves. If, by chance, the person you ask says “no,” then you say “next.” Successful people are very action oriented. Take action now!

My life purpose is to use my knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm to empower and inspire others to discover their passions, fulfill their dreams, and achieve their life’s purpose.

Remember – If you do something you love, you will never work another day in your life. The reason I say that is because when you do something you’re passionate about, it never feels like work.
