I LOVE IT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG!!

Keith came to my pharmacy window yesterday and kindly said: ”Corey, I moved to this area about 6 months ago and one thing has become very clear. You are the most popular guy in town. How is that?”. I said: ”Because I love it when things go wrong!!”. I then gave him my best smile and patted him on the shoulder.

“Come again?” he said.

“Well my friend, I’ll let you in on a little secret” I replied. ”I have been in customer service since I was 9 years old. I learned right away that two things in life are true. First, if you get the paper on the porch, good things will happen for you. Second, the paper doesn’t always end up on the porch.”

Now I had his full attention. He gave me his own best smile and said: ”Go on…”. Here’s what I shared with him.

“Problems are simply opportunities to show what you can really do!! When the paper ends up in the bushes, you can either make things right, or you can make excuses!! WHEN THINGS GO WRONG~ THAT’S WHEN I GO TO WORK!!! It gives me a chance to show people how much I care. I believe that when the spit hits the fan, great people stand UP. Average people stand DOWN.”

I could tell he was VERY interested, but not very clear on my meaning. Keith I said: ”People want to know that you have their back. It is only when things get hairy and you don’t flinch that they really and truly know that you are there for them.”

“For example” I continued, ”The worst thing that happens to my customers is that when they lose there job or contract a terminal illness, they find out who their REAL friends are. Unfortunately, many people run away because they don’t know what to do or say when times get tough. But I know that the ONLY thing you can DO is be strong. The best thing to SAY is usually nothing except “I’m here for YOU!”.

In 37 years of customer service the thing that stands out most is that every problem has a solution. The best people keep looking until they find one. I REFUSE to ever stop searching on your behalf. For that reason, an answer always presents itself and I reap the rewards of tremendous self satisfaction and incredible respect from others. That my friend, is what makes life truly worth living.”

Keith shook his head, smiled again, and said: ”See you next time!!”.

In the world of customer service that’s all you can ask for.

    Corey Jahnke has done it again—another great article. Trying to resolve and not run away from problems gives us more life skills to handle problems, gain trust from others and ourselves, as well as be the person people go to for advice. It is no wonder Corey Jahnke has a great following.
