Leap of Faith

We all get to a point in our lives when we need to take a leap of faith. Whether it’s for a relationship, career, health, or major decision of some kind. When we face a circumstance that challenges us to take a leap of faith and we decide to move ahead, we begin with an intention. Typically that intention is attached with good feelings towards a positive outcome.

What is a leap of faith? The basic definition is moving forward towards something, not knowing if it will succeed. You typically act with blind faith that it’s the right move for you at the time, even though there’s a chance it won’t work out with the results you hoped for.

Fueled with your positive intention and good feelings, this motivates you to make a decision, even if there are risks involved. I have personally had many times in my life when I chose to take a leap of faith. One of the most challenging was nearly a year ago, with my health. I had been diagnosed in 2007 with a rare debilitating disease. After trying the available treatments, my condition wasn’t improving, it was declining. I decided to go on blind faith that “something” was going to turn my illness around. A little over a year ago, I found out about a study for stem cell. This process involved using your own stem cells to essentially reboot your immune system. There were a lot of scary factors:

1) It was a study.
2) It was our own financial responsibility.
3) Most importantly, it would put a lot of stress on my body and there was no guarantee it would be successful.

I had to pray and meditate a lot to focus on what direction I wanted to go. I decided that I was going to take a leap of faith and have the stem cell done. When my fears would start to creep up, I turned my focus back to my original intention of hope and faith. It’s been almost a year since my stem cell transplant and I’ve already had a better year since 2007, both physically and mentally.

It can be easy to set an intention when you think about the beneficial outcome. After you start moving towards that goal, potential doubts and fears can distract you. Sometimes the fears become so overwhelming that you drag your feet or stop the process altogether. Of course, there are times that I started going towards something and realized, it wasn’t the right direction for me. However, if it’s because of fear, then I’m reacting out of that emotion instead of what I truly believe. Then there is the factor of someone talking you out of it because they believe they know what’s best for you. If you don’t listen and continue moving forward and it doesn’t work out, you get the “I told you so.” I’m not suggesting that you never listen to anyone else but there is a difference in letting other people dictate your life and considering a different perspective. Just remember, no one knows what’s best for you more than yourself. It’s easier to say how that football player should’ve ran for that touchdown when you’re sitting watching the game instead of playing it. If you feel with all your heart that you need to take a leap of faith, then by all rights, go for it! While you’re on that path and you need support to keep encouraging you along the way, there are many resources out there.

Here are a few:

-Faith (spiritual)
-Loved ones that are supportive.
-Life Coach
-Inspirational Books
-Vision Board

Even if taking your leap of faith doesn’t always turn out like you originally intended, it might point you towards another direction that’s even more beneficial. I personally believe that either way, it’s always positive because it carries a valuable lesson. Even if you fail, you will know the answer and you can focus on another avenue. There’s that saying, “Better to have tried and failed than have failed to try.” I personally like this one, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” (Henry Ford)

When you are faced with something that you know to your core can benefit you and enhance your life, maybe it’s time to take a leap of faith.
