Remembering the Victims of 9/11

By Joy Bing Fleming, MBA

Today is the 10th anniversary of Sept 11th. Let’s say a prayer for the victims of 9/11 and remember them in our hearts.

I wanted to share my own personal story with you. I was in New York 10 years ago on Sept. 11. I was there for the Michael Jackson concert (which was on Sept. 10, 2001).

On the morning of 9/11, I was supposed to fly back to Charlotte. I found out about the attacks prior to leaving my hotel for the airport. I was staying several blocks away from the Trade Center, but I was close enough for smoke to come into our hotel.

The hotel staff told us – “Don’t be alarmed. The hotel is not on fire. Smoke is just coming in from the outside due to the attacks.”

It was a very scary day. We didn’t know if there was going to be another attack. We didn’t know what was going to happen. All the phone lines were busy, so my family couldn’t reach me. That was 1 of the scariest days of my life.

You know – New York is the city that never sleeps, and the streets of New York are normally full of people. After the attacks, the streets were so quiet (except for ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, & helicopters). If people were on the streets, they were wearing masks because of all the smoke.

Let’s pause for a moment and remember all the victims and all the people who lost their loved ones on 9/11. They will always be in our hearts.

However, let’s also take a moment to remember all the things that we have to be grateful for. We are all still here, and we’re alive.

What are you grateful for today? I welcome you to share your thoughts on our Gratitude Blog at: http://power-of-gratitude.blogspot.com

10 years ago, my family and I were living in the South of our country, Chile, beautiful South American country, faraway from the news and the vicissitudes of importance … But a great and shocking news, it was appearing in the TV screen … USA was being attacked by foreign terrorists, and we saw in real time how thousands of innocent people died in the collapse of both towers.
Now, I remember crying with my wife, the loss of lives, and with it the threat to freedom, which meant the attack, as much as you want, Liberty, as a symbol of struggle, Peace, as a field battle, and the greeting of brotherhood and love. I thank my children to be strong and healthy, and my family, respect your neighbor, discussed in an atmosphere of respect and tolerance. I admire the American people for their resilience and courage to face this disaster.
    God bless America

Despite coming to America from England seven years ago, and not having found a job in all that time because I am totally blind, I am grateful and happy for the liberty of this great nation, I am grateful and happy for having Susan my wife and the source of all real meaning in this world, I am happy and grateful that I can read all manner of inspiring things on the Internet, I am happy and grateful that I live in such an amazing time of technological and spiritual breakthroughs, and finally, I am happy and grateful for the many people and material blessings that have come my way since deciding to come here to live. God bless America!
