Sorry Gracie! There’s Always MORE Than One Customer At Stake!!
By Guest Blogger, Corey Jahnke
As I’ve been working hard teaching people how to design and build their very own “Customer Creation Machine” my audiences and I have been doing a lot of brainstorming. We’ve been having a lot of fun talking about the different facets of how to build a business that generates, quite frankly, more business. Those discussions generate a ton of questions. I like that because it’s the people who think they have all the answers that cause all the trouble in a struggling business environment.
My favorite question because it’s’ the hardest one to teach is, “Corey, how important is an individual customer anyway?” I mean Jack is such a jerk. I can hardly stand to see him walk in the door. So, really couldn’t I just cut him loose and how important is one customer?”
Well, here’s the thing. There is no such thing as one customer. Every person has a general span of influence. And for most people, that span of influence is about 250 people. In the book, ”Endless Referrals” by my friend Bob Burg, he talks about exactly where those 250 people come from. But if you sit most people down and you have to make a list who do they do business with at the post office, who they do business with the real estate, all of a sudden you’ll find out, they know a lot of people. And you want them out there telling people how great you are, not how you cut them loose.
So here’s my advice to you. When you have a difficult customer, double your efforts, triple your efforts, quadruple your efforts and here’s why. The difficult customers are no secret. Joe is not a jerk at your pharmacy. Joe is a jerk wherever he goes. So if Joe goes to the real estate guy and says, “Man, Corey up at the pharmacy, he takes such good care of me.” That’s like 10, or 12, or 15 testimonials because the guy thinks to himself, “Wow, Corey can make Joe happy. I can’t even imagine what he could do for me.” I’m not being facetious here, that’s really the way it works.
I’ve worked in a small town for 25 years. I’ve actually run into people who said, “Wow! I ran into Joe and he said you were a rock star.” Now if you could make Joe happy, I’m bringing all my business to you.
