The Power of Positive Thinking

Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life

By Joy Bing Fleming, MBA

Your thoughts and beliefs will become your reality. Did you know that the main difference between where you are today and where you’ll be in 5 years are the thoughts you think and the people you’re around? So, you can drastically change your life by simply surrounding yourself with positive people and by thinking positive thoughts on a daily basis. It’s simple – change your thoughts, change your life.

Here are some success tips for you:

1. Get out of the “Ain’t It Awful Club” and surround yourself with positive people. You will take on the characteristics of whomever you spend most of your time with. There are people that you hang around that love to gossip and love to focus on all the negative things in their lives and in the world. They love to blame their boss, their co-workers, their relatives, the economy, their lack of money etc. It’s easy to get sucked into a conversation with them, and before you know it, you turn into a very negative person. So, you may have to distance yourself from some of your friends. You can still be friends with them, just don’t hang around them all the time (especially when they begin to talk negatively).

You can actually help them by saying positive words to them. Your positive comments may rub off on them, and before you know it, the “Ain’t It Awful Club” doesn’t exist anymore. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

However, keep in mind that you can’t control the thoughts or actions of other people. There are only 3 things in life that you can control – the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take.

2. Stop watching the News and other negative TV programs. I know that many of you watch the News because you want to stay informed and stay up to date on what’s going on in the world. However, have you ever noticed that the News is negative most of the time? As soon as you turn on the News, you learn about murders, losses in the stock market, how bad the economy is, how high the unemployment rate is, etc. Again, this causes you to start thinking negatively and to start blaming other people and events. As discussed in the article, Improve Your Quality of Life,” only one person is responsible for the quality of your life, and that is you. In order to be successful and fulfill your dreams, you have to take 100% responsibility. Don’t blame other people or events.

3. Turn negative thoughts into positive ones. When you hear that the unemployment rate has gone up to 7%, for example, don’t start saying – I’m out of work because of the high unemployment rate. Did you realize that a 7% unemployment rate means 93% of people are employed? That’s a huge number (a big majority). Remember the old saying – Is the glass half empty or half full? It’s half full.
