It’s Just Business

I was in my bed getting ready to fall asleep one night and remembered that I had forgotten to do something. I forgot to do one of my exercises! Without hesitation or resistance I got out of bed and completed my work out. It was about 1am and I was wondering what set me apart from those who will do anything to avoid working out or a healthy lifestyle in general. What I’ve found is that a lot of people do not work out simply because it’s not enjoyable, even though the results could potentially pay huge dividends. If you consider yourself as a member of the “I hate working out” category then consider the following.

First, there is no judgment here. I work out because I enjoy maintaining a certain body type, being able to exert lots of energy with very little fatigue and so forth. Those are my personal reasons that work for me. If you choose to never work out a day in your life, then more power to you.

Second, you may choose to skip working out because you just don’t feel motivated. Interestingly enough, many professional athletes are incredibly unmotivated prior to arriving at the gym. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps commented that waking up early in the morning and jumping into a cold pool is not fun. Personally, I’m only motivated about 10% of the time before arriving to the gym. The point here is that you absolutely do not need motivation in order to get to the gym. If you wait until you “feel like” going you will never get there.

Third, here’s what you can do to approach working out, or whatever else you like to avoid, differently. How often do you complain about brushing your teeth? Do you actually have fun staring at your face in the mirror for 2 minutes while you scrub your teeth? Probably not. It’s just business. Brushing your teeth is part of your daily routine and is non-negotiable….well, hopefully! Sometimes you’re tired, sometimes not. Sometimes you may not even have time to brush them, but you do it anyway. Working out is the example here, but apply this concept to anything else you don’t enjoy but feel is necessary. Treat it as something that simply needs to get done.

Another great post! I’ll never think about brushing my teeth the same way again. And when I don’t “feel” like doing something I feel is important, I’m sure I’ll be thinking about “scrubbing my teeth!”

    Thanks!!
