My Daily Routine that Helps Me Stay Focused

Freedom at your Fingertips

By Joy Bing Fleming, MBA

While one of my Facebook friends was listening to our last Webinar, she began to wonder what I do on a daily basis to stay focused & centered. She also wanted to know what brings me back to a place of confidence when I find myself stressed or discouraged. These are great questions, and I’m happy to share my daily routine with you.

The biggest thing that I do is called my “Hour of Power.” For me, this is 20 minutes of relaxation, 20 minutes of reading, 15 minutes of exercising, and I recently added 5 minutes of worry time. Now, let me explain exactly what I do during this “Hour of Power.”

Worry Time
Now, this may be a little unorthodox and it may sound a little strange to you, but bare with me. During these 5 minutes, I think about anything that’s bothering me or anything that I may be stressed out about. When the 5 minutes is over, I don’t worry about it anymore. Later on in the day, if a stressful thought comes into my head, I just tell myself – “I’ll think about that tomorrow during worry time.” So, by doing that, I’m not stressed out during the day. I stay relaxed and focused on my goals for that day.

Most days, I don’t need the entire 5 minutes. I may only need 30 seconds (or 0 seconds because I’m not stressed).

Relaxation Time
I use this time to look at my vision board, and think about/visualize my goals. That keeps me focused and centered. To achieve success, you must have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. If you don’t know what you want or if you have a fuzzy vision, you will get fuzzy results (you will get some of what you want & some of what you don’t want).

Also, I recently learned about EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). You may have heard about Emotional Freedom tapping, but what actually is it?

EFT is a group of powerful processes that can help just about anyone to achieve genuine freedom from the negative emotions that have created problems in their lives.

I perform EFT exercises during my relaxation time everyday. I’m a perfectionist, and sometimes that holds me back and creates frustration. EFT has helped me to let go of those thoughts of perfectionism. EFT can actually be used for just about anything in your life including: alleviating anxiety, overcoming obstacles, conquering fears/phobias, generating more income, increasing happiness, improving health, stopping procrastination, alleviating stress, improving sports performance, overcoming addictions, and much more.

Let me give you an example of an affirmation you can use with EFT. Let’s say that you’re feeling depressed, discouraged, etc. An affirmation you can use is: “Even though I am feeling _____________, I deeply & completely love and accept myself.” Many people don’t accept themselves, and if you don’t accept and love yourself – how can you love someone else? How can you accomplish your goals and achieve true success & happiness if you don’t accept yourself first?

With remarkable consistency, EFT relieves symptoms by a routine of tapping with the fingertips on a short series of points on the body. The tapping serves to release the blockages that are created when a person thinks about or becomes involved in an emotionally disturbing circumstance. When this blockage is released, the emotions come into balance. Once balanced, the person cannot get upset about the circumstance no matter how hard they try. The memory remains but the charge is gone.

Typically, the result is lasting and the person’s awareness usually changes in a positive way as a natural result of the healing.

EFT is very freeing for me. It’s easy to do. It only takes a few minutes a day, and it has amazing results.

Exercise Time
Most people know that I love to dance, so I have a couple of dance DVD’s that I watch & exercise to.

The 1st is called Zumba. You may have heard about it. Zumba is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music and contagious steps to form a “fitness-party” that is downright addictive. It feels like you’re going to a dance party everyday. It’s the world’s largest and most successful dance fitness program.

The other DVD that I watch is Sean T’s Hip Hop Abs. By dancing and having fun, you can get the abs you’ve always wanted. You don’t ever have to get on the floor to do a sit up or crunch. You just get to do fun dance steps.

So, for those of you that don’t like to exercise, you can make exercising fun. This is one way to do it.

Reading Time
You may be thinking to yourself – I don’t like to read, or I don’t find reading enjoyable. I used to feel that way too. In school, I had to read many books, and I didn’t find it enjoyable. Therefore, reading everyday was a challenge for me. However, all of that began to change for a couple of reasons.

First, today most books are available on CD, so I can listen to them during my “Hour of Power”. I can also listen while I’m driving and even while I’m working. Second, once I really realized all of the genuine benefits of reading, it became much more enjoyable.

Reading keeps you focused. It improves self-esteem, creates awareness, as well as empowers one with unlimited knowledge. Building up your self-confidence will help you overcome fears. Your thoughts will change. You will become a positive thinker. Once you’re focused on positive events, thoughts, and occurrences, you’ll begin to notice all of the wonderful small things that you missed before (like how amazing it is to see the sunshine outside, getting all green traffic lights on your way to work, getting an up front parking space, etc). When you find yourself stressed or discouraged, reading is a great way to take you back to a place of confidence.

You may be wondering what book I’m reading now. It’s called Freedom at your Fingertips by Ron Ball. It’s explains about EFT. As I mentioned earlier, I perform EFT exercises during my relaxation time.

So, find an hour in your day and create your own “Hour of Power”. If you don’t have an hour, you can shorten it to 30 minutes. We all get busy with our everyday lives, but it’s so important to take some time out for the most important person in your life – YOU!!

“You’re an amazing miracle, you’re special, you’re unique, you’re beautiful and there has never been nor will there ever be another you, you are an extraordinary miracle, for there is only one you.” –
Chip Esajian

Awesome post, Joy. I like the part of your “Hour of Power” that you dedicate to worrying. I think it’s interesting that you dedicate just 5 minutes to it. It is definitely not worth worrying over anything because over 60% of the things we worry about never happen anyway.

Thanks for sharing. Have a better than fantastic day!

I like the worry approach too. Like many of us at times, we can let our worries consume our day we’ve been blessed with. I will start this approach. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Lynn. Thanks so much for your comment. I love your “hugging” insurance policy. That’s a wonderful idea that will definitely keep warmth in a relationship. I wish you all the best with your book: Reenergize Your Marriage in 21 Days. Much success! Take care.

I like your “worry” approach. You box it up, contain it and keep it manageable. It reminds me of one of my exercises from my forthcoming book REENERGIZE YOUR MARRIAGE IN 21 DAYS. If you know you have to do something each day, you plan for it and it makes life easier. Here is exercise #12 from my book:

    Day 12
    Hug from the Heart

The secrets of long-lasting, happy marriages include simple things that increase warmth in a relationship.
Try this: As early as possible in the day, spend one minute hugging your partner. This is your opportunity to stop the world for just a minute while you embrace, taking in the feel of your partner. What a great way to start the day. One minute can seem long and if it is awkward, aim for 30 seconds at first.
You can hug horizontally in bed upon waking, but try to develop a habit of hugging after you’ve gotten ready for the day, before going your separate ways. After you’ve showered and gotten ready for the day, your paths might cross in the hall. What a perfect time for a smile and a hug. This is a hug from the heart.
If you start every day this way and make it a habit, you will add warmth to your marriage and improve your physical, emotional and mental health. By making a hug a ritual, you will be less likely to carry resentment and anger into the next day. How can you be upset with your partner if you know you will be hugging each other for a minute each day? If you adopt this habit and find that you neglect or miss several days in a row, you will notice that things are not “right.” As soon as you notice a little distance, talk about it.
Consider a hug a day an insurance policy. You will insure against the possibility of drifting apart.
