Did You Just Call Me Competent? Them’s Fightin’ Words!

“I will either find a way or make one!”

Hannibal

A couple days ago I was walking on Cloud Nine because someone I greatly admire, internet marketing juggernaut Mike Koenigs (www.mikekoenigs.com) took the time to read and place the following comment on my blog post The WORST Thing That Can Happen To Your Business!!:

“Great article, Corey! I completely agree with you here. Not only is enthusiasm a key factor in this, it’s also resourcefulness. That’s what I look for in my people.”

I was especially excited because Mike is a busy guy. In fact, he is in the middle of a huge product launch called Author Experts Marketing Machines (a product that I consider so cutting edge that I sprained a gut signing up for it). A quick google search shows that Mike’s peers consider him “a cutting edge genius and an innovator”. He walks his talk!

The next day as I returned to work. I began to think about the word “resourcefulness” and it’s importance in business. Ironically, in my recent post I LOVE IT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG!! I had broached the subject, but I really didn’t get it’s significance until Mike had put it in the context of choosing one’s team.

As a managing pharmacist for one of the country’s largest retailers I am constantly being sent new people to cover vacations, days off, and LOAs. Whenever the scheduler tells me that the person they are sending me is “extremely competent” my heart sinks. To me, that is the equivalent of a blind date being described as “extremely nice”. I always think: ”Can’t you send me Ryan, Susan, or Darcy? You know, someone who works hard to find effective solutions to real world problems? “

I love the competent people as I love ALL people. But, if I were trapped on a deserted island and got to choose my fellow “desertees”; competence is not a quality I would look for. I would look for the qualities that the Mike Koenigs of the world possess~ the ability and THE WILL “to alter reality” if need be to make the world and the environment they are in a significantly better place!

The reason I am telling you this is that Mike Koenigs and I are not the only employers who think that way. If you are at all interested in making yourself “recession proof” then you should ask yourself a vital question: ”Am I competent?”. If you answer is a quick and resounding “YES”, you may want to rethink your strategy. Competence is obsolete. Will yourself to become remarkable!!

Seriously, do you really want the person that delivers the eulogy at your funeral to utter the words: ”He was VERY COMPETANT!”?

Personally, someone’s getting haunted if that happens at MY funeral!!

Of course, I’m too resourceful to EVER let THAT happen!! 🙂
